The Superior Court of Los Angeles County is seeking highly qualified, motivated and accomplished applicants who are committed to upholding the law and adjudicating cases fairly and effectively to apply to become a Court Commissioner. The deadline for applying is July 15. The Court will hold an additional virtual information session on Thursday, July 10, 2025, to answer questions and provide information about the process and the role of a commissioner.
Court commissioners play a pivotal role in meeting the Court’s mission of providing access to justice. Court commissioners conduct hearings and adjudicate cases in various areas, including civil, criminal, family law, juvenile, probate, small claims and traffic matters. Ideal candidates possess strong legal and writing skills, a high level of personal integrity, good judgment, decisiveness, patience, intelligence and exemplary people skills.

Prior Commissioner Recruitment Q&A Information Session:
On Monday, June 16, the Court held an in-person Q&A information session for attorneys interested in the Court Commissioner role. The session featured remarks and insights from Presiding Judge Sergio C. Tapia II. In addition, the chair and co-chair of the Commissioner Selection Committee addressed questions about the selection process and the daily responsibilities of a commissioner.

About the Court Commissioner Position:
Court commissioners conduct hearings and adjudicate cases in a range of areas including civil, criminal, family law, juvenile, probate, small claims and traffic. With parties’ consent, they may also serve as temporary judges. Assignments are determined based on the needs of the Court and may be in any of the Court’s 36 locations throughout Los Angeles County. Commissioners are required to work in-person in a courthouse.
This is an at-will, non-judicial position serving at the pleasure of the Court. Commissioners report to the Presiding Judge. Commissioners may not practice law while employed by the Court. The annual salary is $208,017.84, plus a generous benefits package under the Los Angeles County MegaFlex program.

Selection Requirements:
- Active member in good standing with the State Bar of California
- Minimum of 10 years of legal practice in California
- U.S. citizen and California resident
Applicants will undergo a multi-phase interview process, culminating in placement on an eligibility list. Court commissioners are elected by vote of the Court’s judges and must pass a criminal background check prior to appointment.
Prohibition Against Soliciting Support for Candidacy:
The Superior Court has a policy that prohibits court commissioner applicants from soliciting support from judges for their candidacy. Maintaining the integrity of the recruitment process for the court commissioner position is vital to the Court. All candidates must adhere to this policy and refrain from soliciting support from judges.
Despite this prohibition, applicants are allowed to list up to four judges who are familiar with their work as references.
