Bench Bar Updates

Effective Feb. 2, 2026, the Superior Court of Los Angeles County’s Probate Division introduced four new case subtypes to streamline the guardianship filing process. Attorneys and self-represented litigants are now asked to specify a subtype for all new filings that initiate probate guardianship in order to clarify the relationship between the parties and the age of the individual involved.

The four new subtypes are:

  • Non-Relative to Adult 18 to Under 21
  • Non-Relative to Minor Under 18
  • Relative to Adult 18 to Under 21
  • Relative to Minor Under 18

When initiating a new guardianship case through electronic filing, parties should select the appropriate subtype under “Case Information.” Relevant guidance for these categories can be found in the following form sections:

  • Form GC-210P (Petition for Appointment of Guardian of the Person): Sections 5 and 8.
  • Form GC-210 (Petition for Appointment of Guardian of Minor): Sections 2, 3, and 4.
