Dear Members of the San Fernando Valley Bar Association,

It is with great sadness that the San Fernando Valley Bar Association shares the following announcement from Nemecek & Cole regarding the passing of their partner and our friend and colleague, Jonathan B. Cole.

Jon was a titan of the legal community who devoted his entire career to practicing law in the San Fernando Valley. Over decades, he built an extraordinary reputation for excellence, helping to shape California law through multiple appellate decisions governing the liability of lawyers. He carried that advocacy to the highest level, including argument before the United States Supreme Court.

But Jon’s life and legacy extended far beyond his professional accomplishments. He lived life to the fullest—with energy, curiosity, and a competitive spirit that was unmatched. He was a seven-time National Water Ski Racing Champion, the 1996 Catalina Water Ski Race record holder for men over 45, and the Australia Bridge to Bridge water ski race record holder for men over 50. Whether in the courtroom or on the water, Jon brought the same drive, discipline, and joy to everything he did.

To those who knew him, Jon will be remembered as an extraordinary storyteller who could command a room, make everyone laugh, and bring people together. He approached every challenge—professional or personal—with pragmatism and resolve, qualities that made him not only a formidable advocate, but a trusted advisor and steady presence for clients and colleagues alike.

Jon was also a mentor to so many lawyers, including numerous trustees and officers of the San Fernando Valley Bar Association. He gave generously of his time and insight, shaping the careers of attorneys throughout the Valley. His commitment to the legal community was further reflected in his long-standing support of the SFVBA as a sponsor and active participant.  His impact to the Valley community is immeasurable.

To so many of us, Jon was more than a respected lawyer—he was a true friend. His legacy in this community is enduring, and his loss will be profound.  He will be deeply missed.
