LASC’s Court Commons to Host Free Community Self-Help and Court Career Workshop at Compton College

Court Commons Pop-Up Exhibit to Provide Information and Educational Assistance on Evictions, Expungements, Restraining Orders, CARE Court, Joint Petitions, and Information on Working for the Court  

The Superior Court of Los Angeles County's Court Commons will host a free Community Self-Help Workshop at Compton College (1111 E. Artesia Blvd. in Compton) from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on June 6, 2026. A key part of the Court’s  2025-28 Strategic Plan , these educational workshops are designed to inform and empower community members on key legal topics and career opportunities through meaningful community engagement.  

“The Superior Court of Los Angeles County is committed to serving every member of our community by meeting people where they are,” said Presiding Judge Sergio C. Tapia II. “This workshop at Compton College reflects our ongoing effort to make the justice system more accessible, understandable, and responsive to the needs of all residents, regardless of their background or familiarity with the law. Whether someone is addressing a housing matter, seeking to clear their record, or simply exploring a career in public service, we want them to know that the Court is here to support them. Through events like this, we strengthen community relationships, build trust, and reaffirm our commitment to the people we are honored to serve."

Self-Help Workshops:

Each workshop session will include an informational presentation followed by a Q&A, offering attendees without attorneys direct access to legal experts and resources. The workshops will be led by the Court’s Self-Help Center staff and legal aid staff, who will provide general information and educational assistance on a variety of common legal issues, including: 

Unlawful Detainers (Evictions) 

• Promote awareness of tenant and landlord rights and responsibilities. 
• Empower individuals to resolve disputes fairly. 

Expungements 

• Information to empower individuals to clear criminal records. 
• Reduce barriers to employment, housing, and education. 
• Promote rehabilitation and access to justice. 
• Provide on-site assistance with petitions for expungements.
• What to bring: Community members should bring their Superior Court of Los Angeles County case numbers they wish to expunge, copies of their criminal docket sheets and/or California Department of Justice rap sheet, a copy of their official identification, supporting documents, and character letters.   

Civil Harassment, Domestic Violence & Elder Abuse Restraining Orders 

• Provide information about legal protections. 
• Promote safety and proper legal procedures to facilitate access to justice. 

CARE Court 

• Explain CARE Court eligibility and the petition process. 
• Clarify the role of supporters and available services. 
• Connect attendees with Self-Help and Department of Mental Health resources. 

Joint Petitions

• Information on the Joint Petition for Dissolution or Joint Petition for Summary Dissolution process.
• Provide on-site assistance with Joint Petitions.
• What to bring: Community members should bring completed Joint Petition for Dissolution or Joint Petition for Summary Dissolution documents. Both parties must be present.

Court Career Opportunities:

In addition to self-help legal resources, the Court's Recruitment and Staffing team will be on hand to share information about career opportunities with the Superior Court of Los Angeles County. Attendees will have the opportunity to speak one-on-one with Court representatives about available positions, the application process, and what it means to serve the public through a career in the justice system.

From clerk and administrative roles to professional and technical positions, the Court offers a wide range of career pathways along with competitive benefits, including health and retirement packages, job stability, and the reward of making a meaningful difference in the community. Whether community members are just starting their career or looking for a new opportunity, Court staff will be available to answer questions and help connect them with the right resources to take the next step.

Upcoming Court Commons Visits

In addition to this upcoming visit, Court Commons will continue to host quarterly workshops across Los Angeles County, including planned visits to the East Los Angeles area in July and the Antelope Valley area in November. Specific times and locations will be announced on the Court Commons website at a future date. 

Designed over a span of two years, Court Commons is a modular, pop-up exhibition created to inform, engage, and empower communities to learn more about the Court and the judicial system. Housed in a custom-built trailer that expands into 2,000 square feet of exhibition space, Court Commons brings the Court’s mission, services, and personnel directly to the public, promoting transparency, inspiring confidence, and expanding access to justice.
