Misuse and Sanctions of AI in the Practice of Law as an Employer

As law firms increasingly turn to AI tools for legal research, automation, and workplace decision-making, legal professionals must understand the risks and compliance obligations that come with using these tools. This presentation explores the challenges and potential liabilities of AI, both in the practice of law and as an employer.

Adam Grant, Esq. examines AI’s impact in law firms, highlighting how it can be used effectively, the risks of misuse, and key lessons from real-world case studies where misuse of AI resulted in sanctions.

Luiza Manuelian, Esq. focuses on the use of AI in  employment settings, reviewing California’s new regulations on Automated Decision-Making Systems, recent case law regarding liability, and practical strategies for ensuring compliance and mitigating risk. Attendees will leave with a clear understanding of how to leverage AI responsibly, reduce legal exposure, and implement best practices of AI use in both legal work and employment decisions.

Adam D.H Grant, Esq., shareholder with  Grant | Shenon | Almaraz, APLC, has over 30 years of legal experience. His practice focuses on all forms of civil litigation including construction, real estate, employment, commercial and general liability. He has litigated cases in both state and federal courts and has substantial experience handling complex, high exposure disputes through trial, arbitration, and negotiated resolution across a broad range of industries and clients. His experience also includes complex business litigation involving business fraud, shareholder rights, lender liability, and business torts, as well as representing developers, homeowners associations, partnerships, and individuals in a wide range of real estate and construction related matters.

Adam is the 2017 Inductee in the San Fernando Valley Business Journal Hall of Fame, Past President of the San Fernando Valley Bar Association, and President, Board of Directors of the Shalom Institute, Camp and Conference Center. Outside of his legal practice, he is active in the Jewish community and regularly competes in marathons and triathlons, including Ironman and Ultraman distance events. He resides in Northridge with his wife and three daughters.

Luiza Manuelian, Esq., is a Labor & Employment Lawyer based in Los Angeles, serving business owners throughout California. Luiza represents employers in various employment-related matters including class and representative action for wage & hour disputes/misclassification and claims brought under the California Private Attorney General’s Act (PAGA). She also represents employers in claims for civil rights violations, harassment, discrimination, retaliation, whistleblower claims, wrongful termination, defamation, breach of employment contract and unfair business practices. Luiza also represents employers before government agencies including California DLSE, EDD, and EEOC.

Luiza provides clients with general labor advice and counsels clients to ensure compliance with State, Federal and local ordinances to avoid litigation, including conducting wage/hour audits, preparing policies/handbook for compliance, employment agreements and policies catered to each client’s industry-specific needs. She trains employers on Sexual Harassment, Wage & Hour Compliance, Violence Prevention in the Workplace, Management/Human Resource personnel on employment discipline/leaves. She does presentations through various State Bar affiliations, including the Los Angeles County Bar Association, San Fernando Valley Bar Association, Armenian Women’s Bar Association, amongst others.

Prior to joining Grant Shenon Almaraz, where she is now a Partner leading the Labor & Employment Law Practice for the firm, Luiza worked at an exclusively employment defense firm, representing employers throughout California. Prior to her experience in employment litigation, she served as a Supervising Partner and Chair of the Toxic Tort Division at a Los Angeles law firm. She has extensive trial experience in product liability toxic tort and civil rights violation cases and has tried matters throughout California, including Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Oakland. Luiza graduated from Southwestern University School of Law, where she participated in the Moot Court Program and was a finalist at the National American Bar Association competition in New Orleans, Louisiana.
